Single-family architecture is the perfect canvas for the exploration of the elements of light, texture, and function. The Spivak residence in Santa Monica posed some intriguing challenges. On a lot measuring just 16 feet wide and 150 feet long, there was a lavational difference of nearly 30 feet on the property. Desiring a two-story residence that could showcase an art collection and frequent guest entertaining, the client requested a multi-purpose space to accommodate these aspects of their lifestyle. We designed a 4000 square foot residence with a center atrium to invite the outside light in through an open window wall. Two private sleeping quarters are situated on either side of this two-story volume. In accordance with the client’s wishes, all spaces within the home are multi-purpose and can be enjoyed for a variety of uses.
